Understanding 5/4 time

Five beats per bar sounds harder than it is. The trick is that nobody counts to five evenly; the bar is grouped into a three and a two. Counted that way — ONE two three FOUR five — it stops feeling like an obstacle and starts feeling like a waltz bar followed by a march bar. This metronome accents beats 1 and 4 to make that grouping audible.

The grouping can also run the other way. Some 5/4 is felt as 2+3 — ONE two THREE four five — which produces a noticeably different lilt. Dave Brubeck's Take Five uses 3+2; Lalo Schifrin's Mission: Impossible theme also groups 3+2. Holst's Mars from The Planets is in 5/4 and shifts its grouping to unsettle the listener deliberately.

For practice, the most effective approach is to stop counting numbers and start using words. A five-syllable phrase with the stress in the right place — "hip-po-pot-a-mus" for 5 grouped as 3+2 — locks the pattern in faster than counting does, because it engages language rhythm rather than arithmetic. Once the bar feels natural, add subdivisions and the meter stops being the difficult part of the music.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count 5/4 time?

Do not count to five evenly. Group it — usually as 3+2, counted ONE two three FOUR five. A five-syllable word with matching stress, such as "hip-po-pot-a-mus", locks it in faster than numbers because it uses language rhythm rather than arithmetic. Some pieces group as 2+3 instead, which gives a different lilt.

Is 5/4 the same as 5/8?

No. Both have five beats, but in 5/4 the beat is a quarter note and in 5/8 it is an eighth note, so 5/8 bars are half as long at the same tempo. 5/8 is typically felt as a single fast group rather than as two subgroups, which makes it feel more urgent.
